Yelyzaveta Kremnytska

Yelyzaveta Kremnytska (April 14, 1925 – March 11, 1978) was a Ukrainian painter and graphic artist, a prominent representative of nonconformist art. She was born in the Uzhhorod School of Applied and Decorative Arts, founded by Yosyp Bokshay and Adalbert Erdeli, whose influence shaped her artistic style and priorities. She participated in regional, republican, and all-Union exhibitions and was a member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine. Yelyzaveta Kremnytska was married to the artist Pavlo Bedzir.

  • Kremnytska worked in portraiture, still life, and genre compositions. Her works are characterized by expressiveness and a subtle, spontaneously refined decorative quality. She had a keen sense of color. Under the influence of her husband, Pavlo Bedzir, she became fascinated with graphic art, resulting in distinctive graphic series. However, color remained the essence of Kremnytska’s creativity.
Her canvases captivate with their color harmonies, applied in a pastose manner using tempera, the unique Bedzir emulsion, and encaustic techniques.
Kremnytska did not fit into the context of Socialist Realism and was unable to advance professionally in the USSR. Nevertheless, she created a unique and inimitable body of work.
Yelyzaveta Kremnytska’s works are preserved in the National Art Museum of Ukraine and in private collections in Ukraine, Russia, and the Baltic States.
