Vasyl Perevalskyi

Vasyl Perevalskyi (born June 13, 1938) is a Ukrainian artist, graphic designer, and educator. He is an Academician of the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine, Associate Professor, and People’s Artist of Ukraine. He is also a laureate of the Ivan Nechuy-Levytsky Literary and Art Prize. Perevalskyi studied at the Kyiv State Art Institute under Vasyl Kasiyan, and later in the creative studios of the Academy of Arts of the USSR under Mykhailo Derehus.

  • Perevalskyi was part of the Sixtiers movement and a member of the Kyiv Creative Youth Club. He worked as an art editor at the publishing house Mystetstvo and as chief artist at the publishing house Radyanska Shkola. He served as Secretary of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine, Deputy Chair of the Kyiv Organization of the NUAU, and Deputy Chair of the NUAU. He taught at the Kyiv Art and Industrial College, headed the Department of Graphics at the Publishing and Printing Faculty of the National Technical University of Ukraine, and currently teaches at the National Academy of Visual Arts and Architecture, where he also leads the Department of Graphic Arts.
    Vasyl Perevalskyi is a master of book graphics, easel graphics, and painting. He participated in design projects for Ukrainian banknotes of 1, 5, and 10 hryvnias. His works are characterized by national specificity, deep engagement with folk heritage, genre and thematic diversity, and innovation in the search for artistic means of expression. Perevalskyi’s artworks reflect poetic sensibility and an optimistic mood. His graphic works are distinguished by a precise personal style, refined line work, plastic rhythm, carefully structured compositions, and conceptual depth. His bookplates (ex libris) are notable for their conciseness, symbolism, and associative quality.
    Perevalskyi has participated in national, All-Union, and international exhibitions, as well as in solo shows. His works are preserved in the collections of the National Art Museum of Ukraine, the National Museum of Literature of Ukraine, the Taras Shevchenko National Museum, the Museum of Book and Printing of Ukraine, the Central State Archive-Museum of Literature and Art of Ukraine, the Directorate of Art Exhibitions of Ukraine, the Directorate of Exhibitions of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine, the Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine, the National Historical and Cultural Reserve Hetman’s Capital in Baturyn, the Lviv National Art Gallery, the Zaporizhzhia Art Museum, and other museum collections across Ukraine.
