Oleksandr Stovbur

Oleksandr Stovbur (May 15, 1943 – June 4, 2019) was a Ukrainian artist and master of abstract minimalism. He was a member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine, one of the founders of the Choven art gallery, a member of the creative association Mamаi, and an honorary member of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. Stovbur was also one of the active participants of the Odesa nonconformist movement and held the title of Honored Artist of Ukraine.

  • During his military service in Odesa in the 1960s, Stovbur became close with a group of young artists — Oleksandr Anufriiev, Volodymyr Strelnikov, Valerii Basanets, Liudmyla Yastreb, and Viktor Mariniuk — who pioneered in Ukraine the then-unacceptable, oppositional traditions of nonconformist art. This period marked the beginning of the development of Stovbur’s artistic language and worldview.

He studied at the Odesa State Art School. He took part in unofficial “apartment” exhibitions, as well as in the landmark exhibition Contemporary Art from Ukraine. Munich–London–New York–Paris in 1979, along with numerous exhibitions of contemporary art in Ukraine and abroad.

Stovbur’s works are preserved at the National Art Museum of Ukraine, the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, the Odesa Art Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Odesa, the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Art Museum, the Khmelnytskyi Museum of Ukrainian Contemporary Art, and in private collections.
