Marko Heiko

Marko Heiko (June 4, 1956 – December 7, 2009) was a Ukrainian painter, graphic artist, and sculptor, a representative of Ukrainian modernism of the late 20th – early 21st century. He was the laureate of the Mariia Bashkirtseva Prize (1988) and a member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine (1989).

  • Heiko studied at the Kyiv State Art Institute in the workshop of Oleksandr Lopukhov. He worked in the fields of easel painting, graphics, and sculpture. His artistic repertoire included portrait, still life, and abstract composition. Heiko’s works are characterized by restrained color solutions, tense compositions, and strong artistic expressiveness.
Among his key works are: Still Life with Egg (1988), Farewell (1989), and Landscape with a Set Table (1993).
Since 1985, Heiko had participated in All-Ukrainian, All-Union, and international exhibitions. He was a member of the Painting Reserve group alongside Tiberii Silvashi, Anatolii Kryvolap, Oleksandr Zhivotkov, and others. This group proclaimed the autonomy of painting and introduced a new understanding of the canvas as an independent object of perception.
His works are preserved in the museums of Kharkiv, Sumy, and Luhansk, as well as in private and gallery collections in Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Hungary, Poland, and France.
Marko Heiko was a significant figure in Ukrainian art. He combined academic training with the spirit of modernism, active engagement in informal artistic circles, and an inner integrity of artistic expression.
